The initiative was launched in 2018 by HH Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser, HE Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani and Tania Fares, Founder of Fashion Trust. Taking after the UK’s BFC Fashion Trust, the program aims to create similar opportunities to up and coming fashion designers in the MENA region.
A judging panel of leading industry experts selected the winners during 2019 Awards in Doha, Qatar. Winning designers are Lebanese Salim Azzam (ready-to-wear), Roni Helou (ready-to-wear), Mukhi Sisters jewelry, Moroccan shoe brand Zyne and Egyptian handbag brand Sabry Marouf.
The MATCHESFASHION partnership with Fashion Trust Arabia has created a new opportunity to shine a light on new and innovative designers from the MENA region. What made these brands stand out as winners for the 2019 FTA stems from their heritage and how it intertwines with their collections. From the use of an impressive array of local artisans to inspiration from ancient artefacts and history, these designers bring the Middle East and North Africa to life in their pieces.
In addition to receiving financial support of up to $200,000 from FTA, designers get to take part in a yearlong mentorship program with the MATCHESFASHION buying team. They are brought to London and New York to participate in workshops with business leaders in content, communications, branding, sustainability, logistics and e-commerce.
The collections is available to shop on the British retailer from June 17th, 2020.
You can now shop all of the winning designers’ SS20 collections on matchesfashion.com. The Fashion Trust Arabia award has established themselves as a a well-recognized prize within the Middle East and North Africa. The exclusive and philanthropic initiative does everything from scouting to funding and supporting Arab design talent across the region.
The first initiative of its kind in the region, the FTA is a life-changing opportunity for winning brands, providing world-class industry mentorship for the international market. The online fashion platform will continue to collaborate with FTA for the 2020 Awards as their global retail partner, and will offer the same mentorship program to the winning 2020 designers.
